Revitalisation of The Exchange Hotel in Pinjarra recognised in the WA Heritage Awards 2024

Originally built in 1866, the Exchange Hotel is the oldest remaining hotel in the Peel Region and a long-standing cornerstone of the local community. After an extended period sitting dormant from 2008, the heritage buildings recently underwent significant refurbishment and the Exchange Hotel reopened in Spring 2024.

Now a bustling hub, the hotel contributes to the revitalisation of the town centre by offering exceptional hospitality and a welcoming space for locals and visitors to socialise and connect. Whether enjoying a meal or attending an event in the open air amphitheater, the Exchange Hotel is a vibrant symbol of Pinjarra’s evolving identity and was recently recognised in the WA Heritage Awards.

The Exchange Hotel is located a convenient 3-5 minute stroll across the suspension bridge from The River House.

Conservation or Adaptive Reuse of a Local Heritage Place

This category recognises conservation or adaptation of a local heritage place. The restoration of the historic Exchange Hotel (built in 1866) revitalised one of the oldest buildings in the Peel Region. After years of neglect following its 2008 closure, the Shire of Murray purchased the site in 2012, embarking on a restoration project with strong community support.

The project blended heritage conservation with contemporary design, preserving traditional timber and masonry elements while adding modern steel-framed features.  

The hotel now serves as a vibrant hub for heritage tourism, commerce, and community life, honouring both European and Bindjareb Noongar heritage while celebrating the area’s cultural diversity.
